CHRIS CRICKMAY

2010, Promenade 4: 12 Months Passing.

Lanchester Gallery, Coventry. A series of three 2-hour performances on separate days, interspersed with installations in the gallery.

As the title suggests, this piece was based on an interval of 12 months, which happened to be the time between our two pieces shown in Coventry in successive years. As a basis for the work, each of us created a diary. This consisted of one entry for each month, related to a single event in our lives (large or small), that we chose to record. These texts were displayed in the foyer and provided a background narrative for the performance itself. Objects used in the work included several dis-assembled wooden wardrobes, sourced from second hand furniture shops in the city. The wardrobe has been described by Gaston Bachelard as “an image of intimacy” thus relating to the personal narratives upon which the work was based. Projected images for this piece were taken from domestic settings and intended, like the diaries, to reflect the details of everyday lives.
